Desert Hot Springs Needs more Green! PDF Print E-mail

Desert Hot Springs hosted the 2008 Groundwater Foundation national conference in November.  The three-day conference was held at the Miracle Springs Resort & Spa in Desert Hot Springs.  Speakers included Groundwater Foundation President, Jane Griffin, Tam Doduc, and Board Chair of the CA State Water Resources Control Board, Toby Bickmore, Southern Nevada Water Authority and our local David Koller, conservation coordinator from the CV Water District.

Major news from the conference was the fact that the average valley homeowner uses approximately 1 acre-foot of water in a year.  That equals about 326,000 gallons.  Eighty percent of that is used on outdoor landscaping.  However, by using desert landscaping a homeowner can reduce water usage by 70 to 80 %.  There are also dozens of other steps that can be taken to reduce water usage.

For more information about The Groundwater Foundation and the conference held last November go to: http://www.groundwater.org/pe/conference.html .

Unfortunately, besides this event held in 2008, Desert Hot Springs hasn't made many efforts to green the city or residents.  Their website at: DHS does offer information about recycling as a service but that is about it.  CV Green would like to encourage Desert Hot Springs to focus on ways they can stand out and make a difference with an environmental program.
